MFN Membership: How to Apply

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Moving Forward Network (MFN).

MFN is a national network of environmental justice organizations, nonprofit allies, researchers, and individuals working together to transform the freight transportation system and protect the health of frontline and fenceline communities most impacted by pollution.

Step 1: Review Membership Information

Before applying, we strongly encourage you to review the information provided in the application packet, including:

  • MFN’s mission and theory of change
  • Membership structure and expectations
  • Member responsibilities and opportunities for engagement

This will help you determine if MFN membership is the right fit for you or your organization.

Step 2: Prepare Your Application Materials

Before starting the application, gather the following:

Basic Information

  • Organizational or individual details
  • Key contact information (up to 5 representatives) – names, emails, etc.

Application Responses

You will be asked to respond to the following:

  • What issues are you or your organization working to address
  • What values or principles guide your work?
  • Why do you want to become a member of MFN?
  • What are you excited to gain from joining MFN?
  • What are you looking forward to contributing to the network ?
  • What are 2–3 priority campaigns you are currently working on that could benefit from MFN support?

Letter of Support

  • A letter of support from a current MFN member is required

A letter of support from a current MFN member is required as part of the application. This means you will need to connect directly with an existing member to request support. MFN staff do not coordinate these requests, as forming relationships within the network is a key part of our membership process. You can reference the current member list in the membership application packet.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

  • Deadline: All applications must be submitted by Friday, May 5, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT
  • Time Commitment: The application takes approximately 20–30 minutes to complete once
    materials are prepared.

Step 4: Review & Selection Process

  • After the deadline, applications will be reviewed by the Membership Committee, in collaboration with MFN staff and the Project Advisory Board
  • The review and voting process will begin after May 5

Notification Timeline:

Applicants can expect to hear back within approximately 3 months, by September 8, 2026

Step 5: Stay Connected

While your application is under review, we encourage you to stay engaged:

  • Attend MFN public events
  • Continue building relationships across the network
